Roman Flügel (Klang Elektronik, Playhouse, Dial Records) @ Beatport Headquarters - Berlin (24.05.2013) Roman Flügel is a true icon in electronic music, releasing under many aliases in many different genres. From the banging electro of Alter Ego’s “Rocker” to the subtlest deep house of “Song With Blue,” he has constantly been praised for his flawless production and style. Let us not forget that he’s also a truly fantastic DJ. Lauded around the world for his wide-ranging sets and diverse style, it’s hard to know what to expect from him apart from pure quality.

Sasha (Last Night On Earth, Ministry of Sound) @ Space Opening Fiesta 2013, Space - Ibiza (26.05.2013) Five listens in and the introduction still gives me shivers. A classic Sasha style build up of anticipatory atmosphere that swells into emotion when those deep notes sound. Wavering synths billow out from a percussive tick until finally the whole scene is sliced through by the clear icy vocals of Kicki Halmos (Björk? Is that you?) and we roll into Involver 3 proper. What follows is a choice selection of songs from the indie and electronic sphere, taken apart and re-stitched from the stems up, weaving Sasha’s own musical influences in to form something cohesive and thoroughly pleasant. In a typical musician’s trajectory his sound has mellowed out since younger days and involver 3 reflects that. The beat never accelerates past a comfortable walk, melody and harmony are paramount and vocals are silky soft. In fact if I were to make any criticism it’s that the somewhat high profile vocalists – Little Dragon, Doc Daneeka, The XX, Yannis Philippakis of Foals – have a few too many warbling qualities in common. Involver 3 has an infinite supply of silvery smooth, fashionably imperfect indie style vocals which, whilst making this compilation very of its time, dull it slightly for lack of contrast. That’s not to say there aren’t crowning moments. Sasha’s rework of Smalltalk, by Ultraista is transformative, with a chunky dance drop and gurgling synths relishing in that slightly 90s sound that Sasha will never quite shake off (and we’d hate it if he did). Later in the compilation I recognize the unmistakable rippling which characterizes one of my all time favourite releases from James Zabiela, The Healing. Sasha has introduced a heavy, acidy bassline and remixed this into a totally different creature, whilst still featuring the warm, hypnotic vocals. Everyone will find his or her ‘moments’ in this compilation and this is mine. CD 2, the beatless mix, is an interesting beast but I’m left a little flat. There are some beautiful ambient moments but it isn’t transformed enough to justify the lack of new musical ideas. Overall, however, Involver 3 has upheld the standard of Sasha’s revered series, championing his patent selection of darkness, depth and melody. A beautiful compilation, the success of which is owed to the original artists as much as it is to Sasha, something I’m sure he would be the first to admit.

Miss Kittin (Nobodys Bizzness) @ LLP, Le Mouv - Paris (31.05.2013) As Miss Kittin, Caroline Hervé has always been a generous guest—think of "Silver Screen Shower Scene" with Felix Da Housecat and "Rippin Kittin" with Golden Boy, or more recent spots on many tracks. She brings instant charisma, dispassionate camp, and an immediately recognizable vocal grain.
The thought-provoking first lady of techno Miss Kittin returns with her third album, the self-produced double CD and Four LP set 'Calling from the Stars', released through Parisian label Wsphere records. The album offers up all of the elements that have made Miss Kittin one of the most popular names in electronic music: simple yet evocative lyrics set to an undeniable electro-flavored techno beat. It also showcases a new side of the notoriously enigmatic Kittin, that of an artist unafraid to reveal her inner emotions and beliefs. The perfect primer for the evolved techno-pop sound that makes up disc one of the album.

Bailey (Metalheadz) @ Lost Dubplates Mix - Intabeats Drum & Bass Show (04.06.2013) Legend has it that since the early days of Drum & Bass there have been so many great tracks that remain unreleased and have since been lost having only made it to acetate (or dubplate) for a handful of lucky DJs never reaching the hands of the general public. Here’s a brand new Lost Dubplates Mix (Liquid Edition) with tracks that may never officially see the light of day due to unforeseen circumstances. Long live the lost dubplates!

Ryan Hemsworth (Wedidit Collective) @ Mixmag Magazine DJ Lab Office London (04.06.13) Ryan Hemsworth, the Canadian beatmaker who's unique take on hip hop, r'n'b and bass music is utterly addictive.
He began his career as a singer and guitarist but quickly began experimenting with hip hop and developed into the go-to producer for MCs such as Main Attrakionz and Deniro Farrar. His first release 'No Plans' was recognised as one of the top albums of 2011 and he continues to uphold his name as one of the world’s most exciting producers.
Ryan Hemsworth’s latest EP ‘Still Awake’ is out now. Catch him at Brixton Academy on June 8
It's Hemsworth's ear for detail and willingness to twist his tracks around by the arm that help his work burst through the vapor just enough to stick Mixmag DJ Lab.

Henrik Schwarz -Live- (Innervisions) @ Limited Edition Hot Mix, BBC Radio 1 (07.06.2013) Hailing from the southern part of Germany, Bodensee, Henrik Schwarz is a long time veteran in the German deep house scene. Djing was his first love, having built a reputation at major events in the early nineties. But a desire to breach musical and technological boundaries pushed Henrik into production and soon his live laptop sessions were born. Today he takes his live sets and nine years of production experience to crowds worldwide. His twelve’s are gaining massive support from the likes of Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson and Sonar Kollectiv.

Agoria (InFiné Music) @ International Guest Session, Rinse 106.8 FM - London (08.06.2013) Sébastien Devaud, aka Agoria, entered the world of electronic dance music at a peculiar moment in time. Unlike the first generation of techno producers, he’s too young to have been actively listening to early 80’s electronic pop by groups such as Depeche Mode or New Order. But unlike younger DJs and musicians, he’s been exposed to house and techno more or less since the start of these genres.

Kode9 (Hyperdub Recordings) @ MistaJam Radio Show, BBC 1Xtra (08.06.2013) Steve Goodman alias Burial or better Kode9 and his Hyperdub label have been moulding the sound of the underground for years now, pulling in plaudits and end-of-year polls from every which way. One of the original FWD>> residents, Steve’s always sailed dangerously close to giving grime and dubstep a sparkling shiny reputation. He quickly became a true kingpin of the scene, producing stunning tracks with and without MC Spaceape, and talking it all up on Rinse FM. Now he forges a unique path of simply bass-heavy, leftfield bangers, mixing his dancehall-infused, heavy skanking sound and taking it around clubs worldwide. He’s also a lecturer and book author, and can take credit for bringing the globe the sounds of Burial, Darkstar, Cooly G, Zomby, DVA, Ikonika, as well as stalwarts Samiyam, Mark Pritchard, and Om’Mas Keith, and Kode9 is on an ongoing quest to find those mixes that make him shiver. Mark Pritchard (Warp Records) @ The Hyperdub Show, Rinse.fm 106.8 FM - London (10.06.2013) With releases as Harmonic 313, Harmonic 33, Africa Hitech and Global Communications under his belt, Mark Pritchard returns to his own name for a 12" on Warp, featuring four tracks of bass heavy fire and squelching electronics. Ghosts will in fact be available as a full pressing. Intriguingly, they’ve also confirmed that Pritchard – the man variously known as Harmonic 313, Troubleman, Link and NY Connection – is retiring his network of aliases in order to put out releases solely under his birth name from hereon in. Ghosts will reportedly also prefigure a “more developed and expansive album of songs & features.” Further 12″s are set to follow in the coming months.

Loefah (Swamp '81, Tectonic, DMZ Records) @ The Artwork Show, Rinse.fm 106.8 FM London (10.06.2013) Loefah, co-founder of dubstep’s most iconic label in DMZ, has started putting out music again. Loefah is a name that carries with it a certain level of respect. A producer who was there when dubstep emerged from the primordial bass lake, Loefah then went rogue. Shifting away from the scene's increasing restraints, his Swamp81 imprint has helped fuel the current re-invigoration of the house sound while his own DJ sets carry with them stunning levels of bass.
Numbers and Dedbeat are set to team up to host the Pleasure Principle this year - a brand new weekender based in Cornwall - and to celebrate some of the artists involved have been chatting freely in a series of specially commissioned interviews. Loefah recently spoke to Gabriel Szatan (part of the team behind Pleasure Principle), opening up about Swamp81, his involvement with new label School and what the future holds for the bass world.

Dominik Eulberg (Traum Schallplatten, Cocoon) @ Crobar Club - Buenos Aires (07.06.13) Attempted by so many people vainly, Dominik Eulberg is the one who can claim for himself having reconciled ornithology and techno successfully. Dominik Eulberg, raving ornithologist from the Westerwald is both: an international booked DJ in spotlight and an observer of the domestic Flora and Fauna in quiescence – a master of reconciled contradictions.
Since he released his first disc in 2003 on Traum Schallplatten, the superior producer disperses ecological expertise and the sound of chirping birds in his tracks. He uses nature as a contentual and dramaturgical source of inspiration for his productions since 1993.
A walk in the woods – this is Dominik´s Blueprint for exciting music, because "there you never know what is expecting you behind the next junction". In the forest some rustle in the coppice can turn into a hookline: every single sound is important and endows the tracks with the necessary vitality the dancefloor needs. If minimum or maximum: Not giving a damn, the audience loves extraordinary character as much as a great Basedrum. Combining both, Dominik isn´t held in high esteem - which he usually savours in more blinkered clubs all around the world – wrongly.
"More flesh to the bones", this is his motto. In times of skeletonized diet-techno this is an indispensable estimation more than ever. This is one of the reasons why the DJ, producer and remixer did more than just establishing reputation. Since many years he masters the situationally rocking on 12”-format just as the full-length of an album.
In 2007 Dominik was awarded the "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik" for his second album "Heimische Gefilde", with which he achieved a lot for the generation-spanning acceptation of techno. It was released on Traum Schallplatten, which is run by its most important patrons Jacqueline and Riley Reinhold. He repeatedly obtained front positions at readers polls of the magazines groove, Raveline and De:Bug. He was even voted for Newcomer and Producer of the year. Also his creations as DJ and his Remixes for various artists such as Hot Chip, DJ Hell, Tiefschwarz, Nathan Fake or Roman Flügel were awarded several times.
He will continue to indulge his affectation for more emotionality in the beat-corset in future. The creativity of his musically work will stay complex and innovative, but remains always accessible due to the inherent down-to-earthness. After all one wants to take his audience on a journey, not wanting to ditch it at the ticket counter.
