Surgeon (Dynamic Tension, Counter Balance) @ BROADJ Episode #1585, Dommune - Tokyo (29.04.2015)
Birmingham techno artist Anthony Child has rapidly built a solid and, to a certain extent, innovative catalog of minimal dancefloor techno since his Surgeon releases began appearing in 1991. Compared favorably with Detroit original Jeff Mills from his earliest Downwards singles on forward, Child's tracks have been a mainstay in the popular Motor City DJ's sets. Although Surgeon releases have worked an increasing affectation for acid and trance, an economy of sound and basic hardness combine his and Mills' sound.
Equally influenced by early electro-pop innovators like Tomita and YMO, experimental groups like Can, Faust, and Suicide, and the tough grit of American electro and techno (Robert Hood, Hashim), Surgeon's mash-up is both straightforward and subtly experimental. Further influences from Coil, Psychic TV, and Whitehouse in recent works and DJ appearences do not go unnoticed.

Dub FX -Live- (Convoy Unlimited) @ Theories of Harmony UK Tour Special - London (29.04.2015)
Anyone who owns or is looking to own a looper pedal has probably realized that, as well as catering to us guitarists, looper pedals usually include a microphone input. This can be used to simply route the vocals through your amp or, for more imaginative musicians out there, to add a vocal loop for depth of sound. Australian street performer Dub FX has taken this potentiality and made it his own, bringing looper pedals to the attention of an entirely new audience.
Dub FX uses a Boss RC-50 Loop Station along with a GT-10 effects pedal to create vocal-only beats, and then raps over the top. His music in infused with drum and bass, hip-hop and dub step influences, and he has being turning heads across the world with his street performances.

LSB (Soul.r, Spearhead Records, Integral Records) @ Tjuun In Show, Raadio 2 - Estonia (01.05.2015)
If there's one drum 'n' bass producer you should get accustomed with this year, it's LSB. His productions are super smooth rollers and his deck selection's always on point.
Just check 'The View' (featuring Tyler Daley's vocals) from DRS' recent album on Marcus Intalex's Soul:r label for proof. LSB produced it and the sumptuous piano keys and swift clap drums have become a mainstay in d'n'b sets in the last six months.
There's plenty more to come this year, with another EP on Spearhead, remixes for Lenzman and Kove and a collaboration penned in with Etherwood. You won't be getting that debut LP anytime soon, though. "If it happens, it happens. I don't just want to bundle the next 12 tunes I write and say 'this is an album'. That's not an album for me, it's more a marketing exercise."

Zinc is the master of reinvention! Since bursting into global club consciousness in 1995 with arguably the most instantly recognised drum & bass track of all time, to charging the UK national charts with a genre busting breaks anthem at the turn of the century, DJ Zinc has kept up a momentum that knows no bounds.
In 2010 we see the man himself hooking up with Brit and Mercury Music Prize winner vocalist Ms Dynamite to further blur the boundaries between UK club and urban music. Wile Out is the resulting track from this incendiary pairing and has been battered on BBC Radio One and 1Xtra for months creating incredible anticipation.
Zinc's career as a DJ and producer, however, stretch quite a ways further back, sketching the steady evolution of hardcore from its house and rave roots through ragga and hip-hop-styled hardstep and beyond.

Nathan Fake has kept fans of fuzzy-edged synths and maximal acidic techno beats alike guessing ever since his debut release at the tender age of 19. Early piano lessons floundered when it came to learning to read music: deciding that this level of abstraction was that little bit too abstract for him, however the limitations of his formal classical training have in no way hindered him in his pursuit of professional success. Now based at the centre of the action in London town, from his bedroom studio base Nathan divides his time between writing new music, touring, DJ-ing and remixing. Apart from several 12" and full-length releases for Border Community, Nathan Fake has given his computer edit funk treatment to artists like labelmate James Holden, Radiohead, DFA’s Shocking Pinks or Jon Hopkins, just to name a few. The Prodigy (Take Me To The Hospital) @ T in the Park 2015 - Perthshire, Scotland (10.07.2015)
THE Prodigy have been around for so long they’re now considered the “godfathers of rave”.
But despite now being in their forties, keyboard player Liam Howlett and vocalists Keith Flint and Maxim still have the energy of teenagers.
Their combination of rave, techno and big beat is still as infectious today as it was in the Nineties, and Flint, still sporting his famous spiked hairstyle, remains an awe-inspiring frontman, prowling and dominating the stage on Firestarter.
Kicking off with the raucous Breathe, they followed it recent single Nasty, which saw the crowd set off red and green flares. This and the band’s blazing stage light show added to the atmosphere.
The Prodigy have been discussing the possibility of retiring, but for the moment they’re still one of the best live acts around and a perfect band to close this year’s T In The Park.

Julio Bashmore (Broadwalk Records, Futureboogie Recordings) @ Sian Anderson sits in for DJ Target Radio Show, BBC 1Xtra (16.08.2015)
Bristol producer Matt Walker has been on an unlikely path to stardom. First he blew through the club scene with "Battle For Middle You" and "Au Seve." Then, with his Jessie Ware collaborations, he knocked on the pop world's door, leading to a deal with PMR and his own label, Broadwalk. His short few interviews give the sense that none of this was on purpose: "Au Seve" was a surprise hit, while the work with Jessie Ware pre-dated his wider recognition by several years. The road from "Au Seve" to Julio Bashmore's debut album has been a bumpy one, with an inconsistent hit rate leading up to "Duccy" and its famously harsh internet reaction. Knockin' Boots is a much smoother ride, finding common ground between his dual sensibilities with only a few rough patches along the way.

DJ Spinn (Teklife, Hyperdub) @ Benji B Exploring Future Beats Show, BBC Radio 1 (20.08.2015)
The first Teklife Recordings release is expected in November.
Global footwork crew Teklife have announced their intention to launch a label later this year, kicking off with a 15-track compilation featuring “pretty much everybody” from the tight-knit family.
The news of Teklife Recordings was announced via an email sent to the Teklife mailing list, which said the compilation will feature a posthumous appearance from DJ Rashad, as well as tracks from DJ Spinn, DJ Earl, Traxman, DJ Taye, Taso and more.
The compilation will be available digitally sometime in November, and the label are hoping to do a limited edition vinyl pressing of the compilation ...
The as-yet-unnamed compilation isn’t the first collection of Teklife tracks. Last year Hyperdub and Teklife released Next Life, a 20-track charity compilation dedicated to DJ Rashad, who died last year.

Having recently joined forces with Dubfire to bring us the third instalment of their successful Elements Series, Ideal Audio boss Oliver Huntemann flies solo again on his latest double-header, Licht & Schatten. Whilst we are all aware of the Oliver's arena conquering techno credentials, his latest work finds the German producer taking his foot off gas, just a touch, and allowing the groove to dominate these tracks. The driving, pulsing and cascading bassline of Licht provides the backdrop to crisply synced, stiffly arranged hi hats and kicks, before dropping into a minimal but funky melody. On the flip, Schatten treads a similar path. The track is anchored by an industrial, mechanised kick and flash-like synth touches before swollen, acidic stabs set the pace on the drop.

Etherwood (Hospital Records, Med School Music) @ Blue Leaves Showcase, Block FM - Tokyo (21.09.2015)
His latest LP, Blue Leaves, kicks in, it becomes clear that Etherwood knows exactly what sound he wants his productions to embody.
Honestly, if that’s not the most humbling and enlightening thing you hear all day then I don’t know what is. This leads on to what may be the highlight of the album, You’ll Always Be A Part Of Me, a song that combines a singalong vocal line with a slower beat showing that DnB isn’t all about just putting on a fast beat with a killer drop and hoping everyone jumps around.
Overall this whole album really is a stellar creation from a rising star in the DnB world. It can be most appreciated when played from start to finish, allowing one to see the way the songs melt into each other. A perfect accompaniment to a long train journey or a walk home, there’s something very calming about Woody’s unique take on what can be a very monotonous genre when attempted by someone less gifted.
