Special Request Aka Paul Woolford (Houndstooth) @ BBC Radio 1 (26.10.2013)
 -
Following a run of four incendiary 12-inches on his own imprint that drew attention from right across the dance music community, UK producer and DJ Paul Woolford delivers Soul Music, his debut full-length album as Special Request - diving even deeper into the raw energy of UK pirate radio influences that informed his previous EPs.

Using a studio built almost exclusively from vintage hardware and boosted by industrial-strength EQ and an FM transmitter, Woolford constructs what he refers to as "false memories" - broadcasting his material in order to sample and re-incorporate it in a myriad of different ways. The outcome of this unorthodox method is an album of considerable weight.
This debut will be released in two stages: 7th October sees the album released on a triple vinyl LP; whilst the CD and digital versions, released on 21st October, include a bonus volume featuring the Special Request VIP of Tessela's 'Hackney Parrot' alongside the remix of Lana Del Rey's 'Ride', further tracks from the previous 12-inches, plus unreleased reworks from Detroit's Anthony Shakir, New York's Anthony Naples, Leipzig's Kassem Mosse & Mix Mup, Chicago's Hieroglyphic Being and London's Lee Gamble. Not for the faint hearted...

Feed Me (Mau5trap Recordings, Sotto Voce) @ Annie Nightingale Show, BBC Radio 1(26.10.2013)
 -
Jon Gooch, the creator of drum and bass legend Spor has his feet firmly in the world of house music in 2012. 'Love Is All I Got' is the perfect end of Summer anthem that came about after a few late nights on tour with Crystal Fighters, resulting in the first single from Feed Me's debut album set for release in early 2013 via the mighty Mau5trap. Zane Lowe quickly made it his 'Hottest Record In The World Right Now' and within hours the video was clocking up thousands on YouTube. A future classic is born.

Goldie (Metalheadz, Rhino Records) @ 6 Mix Residents Preview Showcase (25.10.2013)
 -
There was a point in the late 90s where it looked like Clifford Price, aka Goldie, might be the first dance music artist to become a full-on mainstream megastar. With rock music in its post-Cobain slump and hip-hop’s bling period in full swing, some people were certain that pop music’s next messiah would come out of what everyone was calling the “electronica” community, and Price seemed to fit the bill. After his 1995 debut album Timeless became the most popular drum'n'bass record yet, he was the biggest thing in the coolest kind of dance music, and with his acting roles, high-profile romantic relationship with Björk, and distinctive futuristic gangster-punk image he displayed an obvious talent for doing superstar-ish things. Even Noel Gallagher, who’s never been an outspoken fan of non-guitar-based music, appeared on his second album, a sprawling double album that underlined how well Price fit the established idea of a pop star.

But even though Price looked like a superstar and acted like a superstar, he didn’t sound like one. It’s not that he lacked for pop instincts-- his collaboration with Gallagher was an amply-hooked, razor-sharp fusion of drum'n'bass and punk rock-- his artistic vision was based around hard, uncompromising beats and grandiose aesthetic statements like songs with hour-long running times. He would have been the perfect premillennial video star, if only he wasn’t so intent on making music that would alienate MTV viewers.

Compared to the big, broad, gregarious sounds of big beat artists like Fatboy Slim and the Chemical Brothers who were doing the best job of selling mainstream American on electronic dance music, drum'n'bass seemed downright antisocial. The 160 BPM that the average d&b track clocked in at was far outside the comfort zone for most pop ears, with breaks that were designed to keep a listener from getting too comfortable with a groove. And its makers and fans tended to prefer the shadows to the spotlight, both metaphorically and literally-- the London clubs the scene coalesced around were pioneers of anti-promotion, and their dance floors were often underlit to the point of near-total darkness.

And for all of his apparent pop ambition, Price was one of the biggest proponents of this aspect. The Metalheadz crew he headed up was considered the gold standard for bafflingly complex beats built with a minimum of moving parts and for basslines that dove down to frequencies that could only be reproduced on extremely high-end sound systems-- even then they were more felt than heard. Its skull-with-headphones logo served a role as something like the Jesus Fish for hardcore drum'n'bass freaks. Goldie may have wanted to go big, but only on his own radical terms.

It turned out that rock had at least one more comeback in it, Jay-Z and Missy Elliott had been just waiting for a chance to make hip-hop cooler and weirder than it had ever been, and the “electronica” revolution wouldn’t happen for another decade, by which time it had been rebranded “EDM.” drum'n'bass itself never got a foothold in America outside of car commercials and action movie chase sequences, and as the form mutated into 2-step and dubstep Price slowed his previously hectic release schedule back to a trickle and devoted himself to appearing on a variety of British reality TV shows.

Drum'n'bass is overdue for a real revival, though. In the wake of dubstep getting Skrillex-ified a few producers tried heading back to the genre’s antecedent, but the movement never managed to reach critical mass. The two discs of the new anthology The Alchemist: The Best of Goldie 1992-2012 covering the span of Price’s career make a compelling argument that the world may finally be ready for him.

Disc two, which emphasizes Price’s jazzier, more tuneful side is decent. In his mellower moments he indulges in a taste for 70s soul, but he often verges on smooth jazz, and his choice in vocalists runs toward the workmanlike. The third disc, which collects remixes of his work done by other artists, has more than its fair share of moments, although few feel essential. But it’s the first disc, focussing on his darker, more hard-edged material, where Price’s considerable allure snaps back into focus after years of looking increasingly irrelevant.

Some of drum'n'bass’ appeal has always been its potential to overwhelm the listener, usually through its hyperfast breakbeats and physically aggressive sub bass. The first disc of The Alchemist, though, is stunning in its gracefulness. Price balances the style’s assertive elements with slashes of ambient atmospherics, its headbanging tendencies with dubby mellow vibes, and a particular kind of deeply nocturnal feel that’s frequently referred to as “icy” with a warm human heartbeat. It’s the rare career retrospective that not only sounds good for the time it was recorded during, but sounds good for right now.

Listening to a track like 1992’s “Terminator”, credited to his Rufige Kru, it’s obvious why Price never became the megastar some people hoped he’d be. The song has grace and balance, but repeatedly alternates between a hyperspeed beat based on the Amen break and drawn-out moments of ambient freefall, teasing the listener with rhythmic feints and jabs that won’t let them find their balance. By the time a cluster of ravey synth stabs drops in halfway through it almost seems like a taunt, a reminder of the relative normalcy of an average house track. It’s a mean song, but it’s so well designed that being batted around by it is a pleasure. And after two decades after its release it doesn’t sound any less alien, or any less perfect.

Anoraks bang on about the catalogue numbers of the 5 releases on minuscule techno labels long since lost as people over analyze the exact meaning of the smallest of details and the inspirations behind it. It is into this atmosphere that we turn to the lighter side of the scene to break up this seriousness and this weeks exclusive podcast comes from a man of whom his biography lists his achievements as being one of the greatest human beings to have walked the earth, being a member of the inter-galactic council of 9 for a number of years and being recently awarded the prestigious role of Minute taker for Brent council narcoleptic society. We’re of course talking about the electronic production and DJing maverick that is Klute.

Dominik Eulberg (Traum Schallplatten) @ Happy Halloween - Apus Apus Radio Mix (29.10.2013)
 -
Attempted by so many people vainly, Dominik Eulberg is the one who can claim for himself having reconciled ornithology and techno successfully. Dominik Eulberg, raving ornithologist from the Westerwald is both: an international booked DJ in spotlight and an observer of the domestic Flora and Fauna in quiescence – a master of reconciled contradictions.

He will continue to indulge his affectation for more emotionality in the beat-corset in future. The creativity of his musically work will stay complex and innovative, but remains always accessible due to the inherent down-to-earthness. After all one wants to take his audience on a journey, not wanting to ditch it at the ticket counter.

Stanton Warriors (Punks Music) @ Annie Nightingale Show, BBC Radio 1 (02.11.2013)
 -
South West defenders-of-bass, Stanton Warriors have been playing, mixing, and releasing music for well over a decade. In a day and age where the need for immediacy and the new is so great that the single takes precedence and a stellar album has become almost a lost art form, Dominic Butler and Mark Yardley have managed to release albums and four volumes of their Stanton Sessions to much critical and popular acclaim. Previously signed to XL Recordings, the duo now operate their own label, Punks. Their relevance and influence in the scene has grown with every year and Stanton Sessions Vol. 4, released just a few months back, simply reaffirmed their position atop the bass pedestal.

Neil Landstrumm (Sneaker Social Club, Don't Records) @ Rinse.fm 106.8 FM - London (02.11.2013)
 -
Neil Landstrumm unleashes his tenth album. Dragon Under marks the Scottish trailblazer's first LP since 2009's Bambaataa Eats His Breakfast on Planet Mu, and follows a series of EPs for labels like Killekill, Brothers and Don't.

This one will come through Sneaker Social Club, Hypercolour's slightly more experimental arm, and it'll be the first full-length on the imprint.

Landstrumm whose career has jumped from techno to hip-hop and dubstep since 1995, creating a style he once christened "wonky techno" reportedly makes a "return to his techno and electro club styles" on Dragon Under, also meshing together dub, grime and other bass music styles.

The lengthy record features 16 tracks, including collaborations with Killekill's Bill Youngman and rapper Profisee.

Nina Kraviz (Rekids, Underground Quality) @ Village Underground - London (02.11.2013)
 -
We are thrilled to have Nina Kraviz headline our flagship party. As Nina heads to Mixmag Live in November, we know that the Siberian-born artist gets people talking for all the right reasons.

Having released her first single 'Voices' in 2009, Nina's breakthrough moment arrived in the same year with 'Pain In The Ass' on Rekids and last year saw the release of her self-titled debut LP on the same label.

Known for her DJing skills, her sets around Moscow's bars and clubs earned her a two-year stint at Propaganda, one of the Russian capital city's finest clubs, also showcasing her talent at places such as Fabric and Berlin's Panorama Bar.

She describes the Russian capital still as “my city” and has been hanging out for a couple of days to recharge, although she now nominally lives in Berlin. “I guess I’m really a world citizen now,” she says. “I live on a plane as much as anywhere. But Moscow is my place – it’s where I belong the most, I think. It’s still a very special city, and I feel right when I’m there.”

Hybrid Minds (AudioPorn Records) @ Friction Radio Show, BBC Radio 1 (03.11.2013)
 -
Comprising of Josh White, Matt Lowe on production, and Jeff Crake on vocals, Hybrid Minds represent a new musical force, with their melodic, soulful Drum and Bass already making waves across the globe. A synergy between influences including trip-hip, acoustic, soul and jazz, HM, consisting of Sensa, Josh & Grimm, draw on a myriad of influences to produce the smooth sound they are known for.

What can we expect to see from HM later in the year?
“You can expect a lot more music. We have a couple of 12″s we are working on and also an album for Spearhead which is going to be the main project of the year. The process of being able to write whatever we are feeling on that particular day has been very refreshing and we are looking forward to delivering something that we think sums us up and what we are about. We are very proud of it so far and are working very hard to deliver something that works as a package.”

Etherwood (Hospital Records, Med School) @ The Daily Dose Mix (05.11.2013)
 -
Undoubtedly one of the most promising young talents in the Drum and Bass scene today, the Mancunion recently gave Med School talent Etherwood aka Woody, a whopping 9/10 for his self-titled debut album. Although often praised for his consistency in delivering beautiful beats and heartfelt melodies, Etherwood is keen to denounce the labelling of his ‘signature sound’. “It’s always a tough thing to comment on. I hear words like ‘chilled’ and ‘atmospheric’ but that’s all pretty subjective really. I tend to use a lot of keys and guitar over synths and plugins, which I suppose contributes to a more live and acoustic sound.” However, there’s no denying album ‘Etherwood’ showcases his distinct style. “It certainly captures a particular ‘mood’ I think. I wanted to put a stamp on my style as a producer and hopefully I’ve achieved that with this debut.”

In fact, Etherwood seems to have stormed electronic music form nowhere as 2013’s producer to watch. “As soon as I heard that Tony Colman aka London Elektricity had been listening to my tracks and liked them, I was really stunned. I’ve always loved Hospital Records and so having a debut release on Med School was a massive milestone.”

“My creative process since the signing has developed substantially, it’s always developing. Experimentation is extremely important to me and the track ‘Unfolding’ which appeared on New Blood 013 was something a little different from me. The reception it had was really overwhelming which definitely instilled a confidence to be able to explore certain sounds and move away from a comfort zone.”

Undoubtedly one of the most promising young talents in the Drum and Bass scene today, the Mancunion recently gave Med School talent Etherwood aka Woody, a whopping 9/10 for his self-titled debut album. In anticipation for his set at Hospitality at The Warehouse Project, we caught up with Etherwood to discuss production techniques, Eastern samples and his diverse live set.

It is this determination to push boundaries that has created such a moving debut. Woody explains how most songs are written on the guitar or tend to sprout from a piano driven part. ‘We Are Ever Changing’ is the best example of this. “‘We Are Ever Changing’ has an Eastern vibe to it. My girlfriend features on the vocals and I incorporated some Indian flute samples that I found on my hard drive and fitted perfectly. It’s ace when you stumble across something that works so well.“

This experimental ethos also led to new production techniques. “I’d tended to use really long reverb on pretty much everything. So I experimented by using some reverse reverb and panning to keep each song individual. It’s fairly subtle but makes a huge difference to the overall vibe.”

Collaborations on the album produce something special as lyrical meaning builds upon the complexities of Etherwood’s production. He elaborates, “it’s always great working in the studio with vocalists. You can bounce ideas off each other and come up with something perfect. In fact I wrote ‘Falling Out Of Consciousness’ with Georgia Yates and Bev Lee Harling in mind, which features both vocals on the same track “– a pretty unusual approach for drum & bass.

However, although seemingly effortless to producing the highest quality music, Woody stays humble in describing obstacles in producing the album. “’Weightless’ was the hardest track to write” he explains. “The hardest part was allowing the drums and bass to sit alongside the piano part without becoming too overpowering. It went through a lot different stages before settling where it did.”

Similarly, collaboration with fellow Hospital hitter Nu:Tone on ‘Shattered’ “started out as a kind of amen/jungly thing with a long stretched vocal sample. It was all a bit messy. Up steps Dan Nu:Tone and really nailed it, perfecting it in his studio. Having a fresh take on it really helped.”

Looking towards the future, Woody seems hopeful for future projects. “I’m back in the studio, working on new material and the album has created a real momentum in terms of productivity” he explains as new projects look like they’ll be breaking new ground. “I love using strings in the studio. They create instant atmosphere that you just can’t find with pads or synths. I hope with future projects I’ll be able to record or play live with a full orchestra.”

Forever looking to new influences, his set at Hospitality WHP will touch upon a vast array of genres in typical Etherwood style. “My sets are usually fairly diverse, moving from liquid rollers to deep techy tunes and chucking in some half time tracks to keep things interesting” he describes. “I’m looking forward to dropping a few tunes from the LP to see how well they translate in a live context too. I’ve never been to Warehouse Project before so I really can’t wait to play!”

Hi Etherwood, thanks for taking the time to talk with us. How are things going?
You’re very welcome. Things are great at the moment thanks.

You had your first release on Hospital at the end of last year. How did that come about?
Yeah last November I believe. I woke up to a message from London Elektricity one morning saying he’d heard some tracks of mine and really liked them. From there I sent him a few tunes and we went with ‘Give It Up’ as a release on the Sick Music 3 compilation. That was a huge moment for me!

Do you feel that releasing tracks on the label has given you the greatest amount of exposure so far?
Yeah definitely, I think particularly after the release of ‘Spoken’. I’d released it as a free download a few months before but after being picked up by Hospital it seems to have become a bit of an anthem which is amazing really!

When you started producing the tracks for the ‘Etherwood’ LP release were they written with the intention of being released as a full album on Med School?
It was quite a mixture to be honest. The majority of the album already existed in some form or other. A few tracks were written from scratch specifically with the album in mind, some were months old, some were days old. The thing that was most important for me was for the album to take a general stance. I wanted to put a stamp on a certain sound that defined what I’m all about as a producer really.

Do you feel that other musicians on Hospital and Med School have had a significant influence with the sound on your album? Are there other genres that have influenced you as well?
Definitely! For me, it was all about Hospital Records when I first started listening to d&b. I’ve always loved that liquid sound, particularly London Elektricity, Logistics and High Contrast. Being signed to Med School is wicked as it allows such creativity in production as you can hear with artists like Bop, Lung and Unquote who have also been a big inspiration.

You’ve been playing guitar with Jakwob live. Other than guitar are there other instruments you play from a musical background?
Only really piano to be honest. Most of the LP tracks were written on guitar or piano and feature pretty heavily throughout the album as they are instruments I’m most comfortable with.

How important do you feel it is to implement some live features with current electronic performances?
In terms of production, I always try and use as many acoustic sounding elements as possible to keep everything sounding natural. I’ll be looking at establishing a Live set up very soon. I love performing live and I can’t wait to adapt the tracks to feature live keys, drums, guitar and vocals, instead of relying too much on a backing track.

Yourself and other Med School talent just played a great sold out show at Brixton’s Plan B. Are there any plans in the pipeline for more similar shows or an Etherwood album tour?
Yeah that night was so good! You could tell the crowd really loved the Med School ethos and were totally into the music. We have another coming up in Exeter on Dec 5th and then Plan B on Dec 13th. There are no plans for an album tour right now but I have a lot of shows coming up around the album release which I’m looking forward to.

What’s next in store for you aside from the shows?
I’m back in the studio, working on new material, currently sorting out some more collaborations. Working with other producers is always a great way to get inspiration. I also have a few great remixes lined up which I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into.

Ulterior Motive feat. SP.MC (Subtitles, Metalheadz) @ Clearing Stage - Outlook Festival 2013, Fort Punta Christo - Pula (Croatia) 30.08.2013

Ulterior Motive bring out the dark funk flavours of underground drum & bass at it’s finest.

Straight off the back of Ulterior Motives recent exclusive signing to Metalheadz the production powerhouse return with the release of META010 a stand out double A side 1 that features the devastatingly immense *Lost Contact*, backed in perfect contrast with the track *Forgiven*, featuring Peta Oneir on vocals. In combination the two tracks provide the perfect taster for their widely anticipated album on Metalheadz and with output like this it is certainly easy to see why we wanted Ulterior Motive all to ourselves!

Major Lazer (Mad Decent Recordings) @ Mad Decent Block Party 2013, Club Zouk - Dallas (USA)31.08.2013

Mad Decent is doing its Block Party tour through Canada and the US again this year.

Our man Diplo has come a long way from the Hollertronix days and Mad Decent seemed like an empire in the making even before that shady Jamaican superhero that goes by the name of Major Lazer stepped into the game. He “fights the spoils of vampires, zombies, pimps, mummies, and other unsavory forces of evil” they say, but he’s also a nice cartoon figure for Diplo and his mate Switch to hide behind when they planned to give some credit to dancehall sounds and ideas.

Fiyah inna di dancehall with the mighty Major Lazer. Diplo and Jillionaire bring the sweat at the Mad Decent Block Party in Dallas.

Guy J (Lost & Found, Bedrock Music) @ Riverside Public House - Toronto (12.10.2013)
 -
Israeli producer Guy J is the next in line to mix Balance Music's offshoot compilation series, 'Balance Presents,' following on from an excellent debut edition earlier this year from upcoming UK DJ, jozif.

Discovered by John Digweed in the mid 00s, the Israeli-born, Belgium residing artist has become synonymous with a melodic style of house and techno, and on his mix for Balance, Guy takes the producer approach, pulling together thirteen of his own remixes, re-contructions and re-edits of productions from the likes of Henry Saiz, Way Out West and Robert Babicz.

In his own words: “The idea of my mix for Balance is not to give just a regular mix of 80 minutes, but to create, write and produce it. I wanted to make it more special; to give the people who listen to it something that will be worth the time and creativity. Remaking tracks and remixing all thirteen of them to give a story is a hard mission ....

Etherwood (Hospital Records, Med School) @ Samsung GALAXY Shoreditch Studio - London (08.11.2013)
 -
As the most recent signing to Hospital Records sister label Med School Records, there was certainly huge anticipation surrounding the debut album of the London based Drum and Bass prodigy Etherwood. He certainly doesn’t disappoint. As well as being the background guitarist for seasoned pro Jakwob, Etherwood supplies his own vocals throughout the album, paying testament to his unique and expert producing abilities. The Lincoln born star begins the album with intent, with “Weightless” – an expertly crafted song with simple piano rolls and crisp drum production, which is definitely a recurring theme throughout the album. ” Say Life” and “Falling out of Consciousness” consist of dreamy and floaty vocals, which are contrasted with one of the albums heavier tracks – “Shattered” featuring Hospital Records legend Nu:Tone. The variety of different tracks in this album pay testament to him as a producer, and the albums two signature and strongest tracks, “Hold Your Breath” and “Begin By Letting Go” feature contemplative and fresh sounds. Having already captured the imagination of the scene at large with his soothing melodies and productions, Etherwood is certainly Drum and Bass’ hottest prospect and his self-titled album has already received regular air time from the likes of Radio1's Friction and B.Traits.

Tessela (R&S Records, Poly Kicks) @ R&S Records Showcase - London (09.11.2013)
 -
Russell has no plans to release this material as yet, but he's already used a similar setup in collaboration with his brother. Released under the TR // ER alias last year, "UC" explored the zone between the distorted intensity of MPIA3 and Tessela's rambunctious broken beats. Russell says the pair have been working on more material and hope to release an EP in the not-so distant future. Otherwise, his focus is on Poly Kicks. The label's next release will be another Tessela 12-inch, followed by remixes from Kowton and Truss/MPIA3. Russell aims to extend his hardcore-referencing aesthetic to all aspects of the label, from music through to artwork. It's important, he feels, that the imprint has something distinctive to contribute. "There's new labels starting up every day, and I'm aware that it's an incredibly over-saturated scene," he says. "But I've got to the point where I feel I have something genuinely worthwhile to contribute."

And this is what the future of Metalheadz sounds like. Taken from Jubei‘s forthcoming artist album, To Have & Have Not, the producer links up with the jedi master Goldie for “The Prayer,” a classic darkside roller that feels more ’96 than 2013, and is just what we needed. For so many drum & bass acts who have left the proper foundation behind, Jubei knows just how to brings us back down from that cloud, keeping things dark, scientific, and beautiful. To Have & Have Not is out now.

Ulterior Motive feat. SP.MC (Subtitles, Metalheadz) @ Clearing Stage - Outlook Festival 2013, Fort Punta Christo - Pula (Croatia) 30.08.2013
 -
Ulterior Motive bring out the dark funk flavours of underground drum & bass at it’s finest.

Darkside aka Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington -Live- (Other People) @ Morning Becomes Eclectric, KCRW 89.9 FM Los Angeles (15.11.2013)
 -
Two years ago, excellent up-and-coming electronic musician Nicolas Jaar hit the ground running with his debut album “Space Is Only Noise,” an album that garnered tons of acclaim, and rightfully so. Although the American-Chilean musician hasn’t released a proper followup since, he has recorded music with guitarist and fellow electronic musician Dave Harrington under the collaborative name Darkside. Darkside released an EP in late 2011 which was followed up earlier this year by “Random Access Memories Memories,” a remix LP of the new Daft Punk album, although this album was released under the name Daftside. Finally, though, we have the studio debut from Darkside, and it’s an infectious blend of groovy progressive rock, krautrock, and ambient electronic music. It’s like listening to a collaboration between Can, Santana, and Brian Eno. I almost wasn’t sure what to make of it at first.

Much like bass virtuoso Thundercat, Darkside like to incorporate strangely toned vocals in their music. I believe these vocals are provided by Nicolas Jaar but I’m not exactly sure. Anyway, the vocals enhance this album’s already well-defined atmosphere much in the way Portishead enhance their sounds with the vocals of Beth Gibbons. This album is just so complex at times that it almost doesn’t feel like an album that could have possibly been written down on paper. It feels sort of improvised instead of calculated. That’s just the only explanation for an album so layered, especially since it was created by only two people. Every synthesized chord, every sample, every drum, every vocal take, it all just sounds too perfect to have been created by mortal man. “Psychic” is like a journey through the decades. It’s like listening to Grateful Dead in the rain but with less hippies and more electronic grooves.

Front to back, “Psychic” is a total jam that really defies song length. It could seriously be one song and would make no difference to the enjoyment and understanding of this record. It’s just one long, peaceful, extended jam from musicians that I imagine are going to be in very high demand within the next few years. It’s a very cozy record that takes ambience to a level not often reached by electronic musicians. Even Oneohtrix Point Never sort of eschewed ambience with his new album and instead went down the route of further experimentation into new genres without as much as emotion. Needless to say, “Psychic” is as emotional as it gets.

As great as “Space Is Only Noise” was, I’d definitely say that “Psychic” is a much better record. Even though they were technically the products of two different “artists,” Nicolas Jaar’s beautiful instrumentation and production are both apparent and very difficult to ignore. This isn’t the sort of electronic music that glitches or makes you want to dance, and it’s certainly not the purest form of ambient music that’s ever been put out, but it’s an intelligent melding of genres that makes for a truly psychedelic and mind-melting piece of music. So take some time out of your day to listen to “Psychic” because you won’t regret it.

High Contrast (Hospital Records) @ Samsung GALAXY Shoreditch Studio - London (15.11.2013)
 -
High Contrast is quite simply one of the best producers to ever try their hand at d’n’b. Since he was first signed to Hospital Records way back in 2000 due to his ground-breaking Mini Disc demos, he’s gone on to become one of the most iconic and well respected producers in the genre. Releases such as ‘High Society’ and ‘Tough Guys Don’t Dance’ as well as his iconic FabricLive 25 mix and being asked to write the music for the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony have guaranteed him a place in dance music history.

Booka Shade (Get Physical Music, Embassy One) @ Dance Department, Radio 538 NL (16.11.2013)
 -
In their latest work, Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier again reveal their talent for transforming the immense sound available from todays electronic production possibilities into pure, ethereal lightness. In that sense, Booka Shade and Fred Astaire arent all that different. They don't simply dance. They prance. A few summer days in Manchester finally brought light to the end of the tunnel. Booka Shade set up house in the citys acclaimed EVE Studios, a residential vintage recording studio where musicians can live and work with rare, old-school recording equipment around the clock. That moment of clarity in Manchester, when everything suddenly fell into place, has now been immortalised in their new album title. And Eve remains true to the principle that has underpinned this duos work from their first musical experiments right up to today: Booka Shade perform with four hands. Thats it. Two hands on the drums and two hands on the keyboards have to do the job for every track in the studio and on stage. The only exception is when they are joined by special guests, this time including such luminaries as Fritz Helder (Azari & III), as well as Groove Armadas Andy Cato blasting his trombone in a vast echo chamber while Fritz Kalkbrenner heralds the next departure singing the hymnal lines, Weve burned the bridges on our way. Booka Shade have a long history of building new bridges. Those bridges connect their rich past as producers with the glorious present, from Berlins Maifeld to Jesolo on the Mediterranean and onwards to the Far East. Booka Shade are underway again and Eve is like a great voyage, an album imploring listeners to get moving, to begin dreaming and to start prancing.

Matrix & Futurebound (Viper Recordings) @ DJ Friction Radio Show, BBC Radio 1 (17.11.2013)
 -
Over the last few years the genre of DnB has been accepted by the mainstream listeners on commercial radio stations as the UK dance scene rises further still. Matrix & Futurebound are amongst the leaders of the recent charge. Their new release ‘Control‘ which features the vocals this time round from Max Marshall, will no doubt have the same reception.

The track is a perfectly crafted blend of euphoric and chilled, intricate beats. Beginning with a delicate intro which soon rises with a euphoric feel, the original mix is just crying out for radio airplay as the tune has a great balance between clubland DnB and fitting in with yet shadowing the usual dross on the daytime stations today. Delightful dance with great flow, energy and bounce.

Artificial Intelligence (Shogun Audio, V Records) @ Rinse.fm 106.8 FM - London (20.11.2013)
 -
Long established d`n`b duo A.I. - now stepping up to Shogun Audio with a 4-pack of turbo-charged trickery ready to make you shake with the brand new You Can Dream EP.

‘Let You Go’ is a big room vocal anthem, pure and simple. Opening with Tiki’s lyrics riding the break before we dive head first into a massive square wave bassline mover with soaring synths and pads drifting over the top and Tiki’s ‘I cannot let you go’ refrain to take you away. The mood darkens considerably for ‘Freedom Come’ with DRS sounding like you’ve never heard him before.

The title track ‘You Can Dream’ takes us back up into the ethereal realm with soothing strings and Steo’s vocal sitting delicately over body rocking drums and more of A.I’s trademark studio manipulation that always manages to take things up another level.

Crissy Criss D&B M1X Radio Show - 01 - SpectraSoul (Shogun Audio) @ BBC 1Xtra (20.10.2013)

Following on from their debut album over a year ago the duo returns to Shogun Audio with a straight up Spectrasoul 12″. This release encompasses their sound and name perfectly: “Bugsy” is the darker spectra and “Play The Fool” featuring the vocalist Jamie Jooste brings the soul. Overall it’s a solid release and I look forward to hearing more on Shogun’s forthcoming “Way Of The Warrior 2“ LP.

Ant TC1. He’s the mastermind behind the firing Dispatch Recordings label. He’s a seasoned DJ and one of the few who mixes live with the monitors as loud as Andy C. And similarly, after this much time his hearing has held out long enough to never ever falter on the A&R front.

So I guessing 2013 was a good one, all in all?
2013 was definitely an outstanding year for us. We had the best year ever as far as feedback from our audience went and our goal is to improve on this even more in 2014. It’s an exhausting role but I love it and thats what keeps me going.
