im Ocean Lounge:
DJ COLETTE/ Nettwerk America / Champion Sound / Chicago

DJ Colette is one of the hottest DJs and producers. She sings her own smooth, mesmerizing vocals over the music that she spins. Her songs have a powerful and energetic groove. The juxtaposition of her beautiful voice against the hard house beats is so overpowering that it simply draws the crowds into magic.

She has taken classical voice lessons when she was nine and opera training as a teen. She began her career in house music when she was eighteen, bought her first turntables when she was twenty, and began to mix her beats. She released her first solo work "Try Her For Love" and completed her first US tour with SuperJane, a group of four female DJs. Soon she was in Spin, Urb, XLR8R, Time Out and other publications. Since then she has released two albums "Into the Sun" and "Our Day." DJ Colette has become one of the hottest deep house DJs ever, and has opened shows for The Chemical Brothers and for Fatboy Slim, St. Etienne and RunDMC.

Interview by Mauricio Saravia

ARTIST INTERVIEWS: You spin and mix your vocals. Your voice is spellbinding. Can you tell us about the recording of "In the Sun" and "Our Day"?

DJ Colette: My first mix CD "In the sun" came out the summer of 2000. It's a vocal/turntable session that covers a mix of tech-house and deep house. It was recorded similarly to how I do my live show, so you get the sense of being in a club. In my new CD "Our Day", I wanted to focus more on the singing and have the songs sound like original recordings. Angel Alanis did an amazing job mastering this CD. All the songs relate to different stages of love, carrying on a story through the records.

AI: What was your experience performing with Fatboy Slim and The Chemical
Brothers?

DJC: Opening up for Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers was interesting in the fact that their audience was most ready for them and not anyone else. The crowd could have cared less who was playing before them and proved that by standing motionless until Fatboy Slim got on the decks. A few of us went to play in the hallway of the auditorium during the main show and were amazed by the positive response we got there. Everyone who had ignored us in the main room earlier were now downstairs dancing up a storm. It ended up being a great night beyond it's shaky beginnings.

"I see house music continuing to expand,
definitely hitting the pop market more and more."

AI: You have traveled from Hawaii to Tel-Aviv. Do you have any unusual experiences that you would like to share?

DJC: Touring has got to be the most surreal experience ever. First off, you rarely sleep so everything that happens occurs in some sort of dream state. We flew everywhere, so everyday pretty much went like this: 1) wake up after 3 hour nap 2) fly to next city 3) check in hotel 4) inhale food 5) run to venue 6) play records 7) go back to hotel 8) repeat. We would do this 5 days out of the week for a month. It was insanity! An experience like this teaches you so much. If you don't love what you're doing, there is no way you'll survive something like that. I learned so much about music and my friends on this tour, it was an eye opener on many levels.

AI: How do you see the house music scene in 2002?

DJC:I see house music continuing to expand, definitely hitting the pop market more and more. What's great about house music is that it's always there, regardless of what other music is in the spotlight. It's not a fad for it's listeners ... I think that's what gives it it's staying power.

AI: What's on your stereo now?

DJC: The best of 1980-1990: U2

AI: What's a day in the life of DJ Colette like?

DJC: When I'm not touring on the weekends, (spending every free minute in the airports) I'm usually working at home. I work in the studio or in my office. There is always something involving music going on in my day! If it's not making music, it's having a meeting about making music. I don't ever have a day off, but I'm pretty okay with that for the time being.

AI: What are plans for 2002?

DJC: I'm working on my Nettwerk album right now, something I've been waiting to do for a long time. I'm really excited for it, the people that are working on it are amazing! Angel Alanis, CPEN, and Home & Garden to name a few. SuperJane is also going on mini tours of Europe this year, so that is something to look forward to as well. 2002 is hopefully going to be more of the same, lots and lots of music!

AI: Thank you so much, DJ Colette!

DJC: You're welcome!!

DJ COLETTE USA

dj Colette is one of the first DJs to add her vocals to the record she spins, inspiring a new category of performance in the electronic world. As countless others begin to sing and spin many can still not compare to the vocal/turntable sessions Colette delivers.

How many singing DJs combine up-close observation of the legendary Derrick Carter and Mark Farina dating back to Chicago in the late Eighties with formal operatic training from the ages of nine to eighteen? Probably not many. In fact, there may not be any DJ today who can match the impressive pedigree of former music teacher turned mix-master DJ Colette. Having already displayed that pedigree in clubs and festivals throughout the world, both on our own and with the beloved Super Jane collective she helped form, Colette is ready to establish herself as an upper-echelon DJ with the release of her Nettwerk America debut Our Day.

Colette showcases that operatic training from the outset with the bluesy, a cappella intro/title track. Aside from Our Day, Colette is now the host of a mix show on Los Angeles' largest Top 40 station, KIIS-FM.Colette credits both her mixing style and her improvised vocals to coming up as part of the fertile Chicago house music scene at the turn of the Nineties. "I'm very spoiled because Derrick Carter and Mark Farina are the first DJs I got to hear growing up in Chicago. And I definitely learned how to spin watching people. Because at that time, unlike now, there weren't any classes, or people, that were willing to instruct you. I remember when I was 16 I used to watch Dizz and Lego; I'd watch every little thing that they were doing and just kind of suck it in." It was also at those house parties that Colette, a classical music student by day, began to find the liberation she still enjoys from singing over other people's records.

"I started singing with house music when I was 16 or 17. I would go to parties and just freestyle over other DJs playing." That spontaneous approach, a dance music version of rapping, is something that has stuck with her through the present. To Colette, there is no better rush than the one that comes from improvising in front of a room full of clubgoers. "It's very impromptu when I write a song over a record, cause a lot of times I'll buy the record that day and when I'm playing it out that's when I write the lyrics," she says laughing. "There's definitely something to be said for a practiced performance, but it's really freeing to just improvise. Because it's almost like you're one of the people in the party. It's just like dancing; you don't really have a set dance routine when you go out to a club; you just feel it and you react to it. And it's the same thing for me." Colette's generous nature is something she tried, successfully, to imbue Our Day with. Like it's creator, the CD sings with warmth. "The CD is very summer-y, even though it's coming out in the fall. It's very warm and fun," she says, speaking from LA, where she moved little over a year ago.

"With all the music that I've been making I've been really trying to focus on a lot of positive things, both sonically and lyrically."
