The yellow cat looks out the window, waiting for his dinner. He eyes the pigeons perching carelessly just to his right and the little gray mouse hiding under the step near the street below, but neither of them will be his meal tonight. He's a ravenous hunter, the feared king of the creatures, but in this hour his prey is safe. For tonight, like every night, the tall well-dressed man will bring him his dinner of cold fish
. He waits patiently at the spot in front of the window where the well-dressed man always places the bowl, hearing him move about in the next room. He can't read the clock, however he can sense that his feast is late. But the well-dressed man never forgets to feed his master, so he doesn't need to worry.
Then before he can even complain, it happens. The door opens, closes. "Did he leave? No, of course not...not without feeding me."
The yellow cat looks out the window, still waiting his dinner. He eyes the well-dressed man walking briskly out of the building, rushing off down the street. The bastard! He forgot! He will pay for this. Still hungry, he jumps from the window and stalks angrily into the other room at the back of the apartment. The man will pay for this. Before he can even dig his claws into the blue chair in the corner, he hears it – the pigeon sitting in the tree just beyond the open window. The window is never open.
The well-dressed man can't remember anything today.
The yellow cat looks up at the open window, reassures himself "Well, I am the ravenous hunter, the king of the creatures," before he lunges at the bird. But hunting birds is more difficult than hunting cold fish in front of his window. The bird flies easily away to safety and the yellow cat has nothing to hang onto as he falls to the street below. Shit, this is going to hurt.
But the landing is soft! The drunkard sleeping in the alley screams out some curses, but the yellow cat runs off before the man even knows what landed on his head. When he's a safe distance from the flailing mass of old rags and bottles, he looks out toward the street ahead - there's nothing back where he fell so there's no choice but to creep slowly out into the chaos.
The yellow cat reaches the edge of the alley, peers to his right and sees a sea of feet, taking their people wherever they may go. He then peers to his left and freezes in complete terror at the snarling beast of teeth and hair lunging at him. He can't even move, as time seems stands still with this drooling monster staring in his face, suspended by nothing but an iron chain. But the lady carried by the bright red shoes bellows "No Curtis!" then yanks his iron chain and pulls her dog down the street. As they near the corner, this iron Curtis turns around to wink at the still-frozen cat, just if to say "Gotcha."
Asshole.
Startled, the yellow cat rushes to the shrub next to the steps and ducks below, not sure what to do. He's watched this street, these bushes, these steps the whole day long for all of his life, conquering it daily from his perch above, but never thinking how he'd ever come back inside. Staring with anguish up at his window, wishing to go back in, he mutters a little whine. The little mouse Migrén sits unseen under the steps and has a quiet laugh.
Then he sees the feet on the steps. He knows the shoes; he's seen them before. No time to think, only to dart in through the open door! Following unseen into the building, up the stairs. Sneaking unnoticed through the door of apartment 2-b.
The yellow cat pauses and looks around at his apartment, unsure what just happened. It doesn't matter; he's safely inside now. He strolls leisurely over to his perch. The well-dressed man emerges from the kitchen with the bowl of cold fish, fresh from the store, and places it in front of the window.
The yellow cat looks out the window, eating his dinner. He glances at the pigeons perching carelessly just to his right and the little gray mouse laughing under the step near the street below. He now has his dinner, so they are safe from the ravenous hunter tonight.
